[BizCheck = Chung, Goo-hak] A professional golfer was disqualified from the Korean Professional Golf Association (KPGA) after his younger brother was found to have substituted for his older brother, who is an aspiring professional.
According to the KPGA Secretariat on August 18, a tour pro named C (family name) competed on behalf of his brother, who is an amateur, in the second professional selection held at a local golf course last August. The tournament organizers did not realize that he was playing as a proxy at first because he had a similar face to his brother's, and he covered his face with a large mask due to the strong sun.
However, after complaints and reports from the players they were playing with, the proxy application was discovered.
The KPGA Secretariat then requested an investigation by the Competition Committee, and as it was found that the proxy entry was intentional, the Competition Committee decided on the highest level of discipline in April, disqualifying the younger brother, C (family name) Tour Professional, and the KPGA Board of Directors confirmed the discipline on May 27.
The elder brother, who had also taken the professional test, was among the top performers, but was reportedly disqualified due to his brother's substitution.
“The disciplinary decision can be appealed within a certain period of time, and there is also the possibility of filing a civil lawsuit,” said the KPGA Secretariat, adding, ”Before finalizing these procedures, we cannot disclose the identity of the disciplinary person and the details of the discipline due to possible defamation.”
“While it is not uncommon for professional golfers, both men and women, to be disciplined for misreporting scores, cheating on the number of golf balls played, or unsportsmanlike conduct, such as suspensions, it is extremely unusual for a proxy to be disciplined in this manner,” said a professional golfer.
The case is a cautionary tale of a family of golfers who have devoted their lives to the game, and the way in which their fraternal love for the game has been undermined, and the way in which it has hurt other golfers.
